"Gwydion, I'm going on a journey..."
« on: September 19, 2011, 02:58:30 AM »
That's right, in a few days I'll be off (afk) for 2 weeks. Whilst I'm away I expect the usual: ridiculous posts which I have to clean up when I get back (most of which appear in my Gmail inbox flagged as inappropriate by you, and most of them by the same user) and a general lack of morale because people think I've lost interest in this project. Not to mention a long soliloquy (or two) from Pete which invariably involves navel gazing and ends up with him proclaiming he is moving on from programming.

So who is Gwydion? And does this make me the thing he escapes on or a cat? There's a reason why they say cookies are bad!

QB64, the fun has just begun! :D

Gwydion was one of the heroes 0f the "Battle of the Trees".
There Amaethon, Gwydion's brother, steals a white roebuck and a whelp from Arawn, king of the otherworld. What follows is a great conflict fought between the sons of Dôn and the forces of Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld.

Gwydion fights alongside his brother and, assisted by Lleu, enchants the "elementary trees and sedges" to rise up as warriors against Arawn's forces.
The aspen falls in battle, while the alder leads the attack.
Heaven and earth tremble before the oak, a "valiant door keeper against the enemy".
Even the little bluebells unite causing consternation. The hero is the holly, prickly green.

One of the warriors fighting on Arawn's side cannot be vanquished. The only way, it seems, is to guess his name. Gwydion guesses right. He identified him from the sprigs of alder on his shield, and sings two englyns:

    "Sure-hoofed is my steed impelled by the spur;
    The high sprigs of alder are on thy shield;
    Bran art thou called, of the glittering branches."

    Sure-hoofed is my steed in the day of battle:
    The high sprigs of alder are on thy hand:
    Bran by the branch thou bearest
    Has Amathaon the good prevailed."

 The castle of Gwydion, Caer Gwydion, is the traditional Welsh name for the Milky Way and Gwydion is being miss-spelled here..

So close Mr Why, but thou hast unearthed the wrong Gwydion. Perhaps thou shouldst examine the other clues I plainly presented to thee.

OK, I'll really let the cat out of the bag and make a feline from the one who eats this appetizing magic treat.

Hmm, are you talking about an old Kings Quest game?  I  loved those.

Well, Happy journey to you.

So you'll be gone from the forum 2 weeks and the only forum moderator is leaving (Pete)? Hope the spammers are on vacation too!  :D

I hope you read my email before the trip, otherwise you might overlook it when you get back.

I'm considering whether I have enough time atm to give (what I consider to be) quality responses to interview questions. You might have to hold off a while on this but I am interested in helping.

I started playing the KQ series at the "heir today, gone tomorrow" episode, but not the first (4?).  Those were some really great games.  I even liked the last one.

Galleon I emailed you some C++ code which constitutes a speed optimizing modification for QB64; I am not sure it works as is on mac OSes(mac is little endian right?) I was originally going to make it be part of the Fast_Math Library but I decided to see if you wanted to try it first and perhaps make it part of QB64 if it passes your tests.

(and for those who might wonder it is a SGN function)

I bet it's buisness.  When he gets back they'll be an update to QB64, and there will be banner-ad's across the bottom!   ;D

It's an overseas trip for family reasons. And sorry, I won't be working on QB64 whilst I'm away.
