Looking for a devoted, talented team!
« on: June 15, 2011, 09:55:16 AM »
Hi everyone,
I've been planning to write a game in qbasic(qb64). It should be a rogue-like/RPG. I hope to mix the two, forming a game that's fun to play! I am the engine coder XD I've had a couple people helping me with the project, but they, unlike myself, have a life. So development is very slow. There's a lot of info I could put on here, but i doubt you want to read 3 pages of boring, useless information to get the point. Anyway, I need people to help get this project going. I'm trying to revive the lost art of making awesome games in qbasic. So if you code in qbasic, and or qb64, or your an artist, writer, etc...I need a team, so email me at j.horne538@gmail.com . I will give you more information there, and hopefully we will get a talented team together.
Some background info on me....
I've been programming for 6 years, with different languages ranging from Python, C/++, to QBASIC of course. I'm very devoted to any project I do. I can be impatient when it comes to lazy people. I myself am lazy at times, but not at this project. This is very important to me.
But anyway, email me if your interested, or just email me for more info on the actual game!
Calkiot

Whats the pay like? But really, i don't make games, but if you need help with your engine, I do make those! Can't you just tell us about the game? Do you have a Google Code page for it?

Thanks for posting. I actually will need some help on the engine. Um, I do not have a google code page, yet. Remember this is in early stage development aka "Planning". More about the game,... I can do that, just didn't want people getting bored before they knew what i was talking about.
This game, is going to be a mix, between a rogue-like, and an RPG. Its going to use a "texture pack" that is in the Texture Pack folder inside the main games folders. In the end, I want the game to be very easy to modify, and to add things onto it. So, I'm also making a scripting language for it. A lot of the game will be written in those scripts. This, will in theory make it much easier, to let the game grow, a lot faster. Also, if you've never touched qbasic before, just read the help file for the scripting language, and then you can add things on. It will be mostly dialogue from the story, but will also be capable of controlling NPC's, and objects that go with the story. Also, I hope to finish the map editor. My way of map loading, it simple in theory, but will allow there to be lots of map files, and easy to use in the game. For the actual story, I haven't got any far at all. I am very bad at story lines. But thats why I need a writer. This will have a medieval look to it. It will be a Fantasy game. I am all up for any ideas that anyone has,...If they are good. We should have a website very soon. But I didn't want to get into it that much, until I know I have a couple of people, helping on the project. Not sure about the pay, its a hobby project, until we refine it, and make it well,..."awesome". But i do not believe we could make any money at all, until we have a nice development kit for it aka map editor, scipting language, and ideas that i have yet to think of. If you can't help, then post ideas. I would be very thankfull for any you have. Again, contact me if you want to help. I will not push anyone "too hard". I realize that people have lives. For now I am the project manager. We have a teamspeak server for easy communication while developing.  (skype can be a pain, but I have that too)

Sounds like you know what your planning, though it will be some effort to do all that! Will you be using 2d, Isometric 3d or real 3d for the game? I am willing to help but have lot of my own projects to do also. When you get some of it done, let me know. Till then, you can check out my game engine (UnseenGDK) by downloading it from my signiture, it should have some stuff in that you can mod (it has a tile engine).

Calkiot, I advise you to create a "pay for profit contract" for your developers showing Intent to pay for anything that becomes profitable. also a websight with a paypal donation link.

this way any portion of the project that can/does sale can be split between cost, yourself, developers.

I know very few who devote much time to a volunteers pay. but many who accept a check..

secondly being under contract with a game company looks good on a resume and many of the up and coming  will join the cause just based on that alone..

thirdly if your comes up with no single profitable product, you owe nothing...

lastly there are many things that can be products such as ideas, story, maps, library's, "copyright" as if you sale a copyright to a portion of the project, it means the buyer can copy use and sale that portion but so can you!

Thank you so much for the info. That is what i'll do exactly! But to be perfectly honest, I'm just your average programmer, with a heart for team projects. So if you could help me get that set up, that would be amazing. I just organize things, sort of well,...But yes, great idea.

But im not really focused on that right now. I'm looking for a team that wants to do it because of the fun, not the pay. So yeah, if anyones interested contact me. Otherwise, suggestions are nice.

Hi Calkiot,

I'm excited that you've chosen QB64 for the creation of your game. You're asking for a commitment from others for your project but what you really need to do is inspire us! You seem to be more interested in making a game than the actual storyline or graphics. That's fine, simply make the game with stub graphics, a boring dialogue or two and a monster so that others can get an idea as to whether you can get this project off the ground or not. I'm a big believer in the 'if you build it they will come' philosophy (citation unrequired ;)).

My advice would be to make it multiplayer compatible from the start, multiplayer rogue-likes usually more popular. As you'll likely be using TCP/IP, you'll want to avoid having to resend data for every step the player takes as 300ms+ lag can be very annoying!

How would you deal with character movement in tile based MMORPG then? I thought my method would work well, but it's slow at best. If it ever get's 20 people logged in i bet it would slow to a crawl.

I think galleone key'd in on the point show us something we can believe in..

everyday there is another emtyhanded ideal ladend guy, who wants to make a million on the grudge work of others we usualy call them polliticians though.

but be here with a stoy line "aural presentation", storyboard"graphical presentation" toss some numbers out there like potential projected audience, expected release dates. these things give us confidence that you will follow through on the proj/contracts and not just giveup or forget it..

just not emptyhanded.

what you offer'd is to mimic a game which is proven, has an audience. this is good but unroll it a bit show us a comic strip of characters like spawn or a story with all ends tied to phillosophy/science..
do that and you are sure to find programmers willing to get involved.

in other words with enough info, the product sales itself, if its a worthy product.

Ah yes, an idea man. We have one of those in the US, he is called Mr. President, but hopefully not for too much longer. He had a team to do hios work, too. Most of them quit, and others keep leaving. Why? Because like Galleon stated, he didn't inspire them.

Basically, you need to have something working, get it posted, and then see if anyone likes it, and would also like to help it get further developed.

Good luck,

Pete

Off topic : How goes meterials denteddisk? Want me back in on it yet?

On topic :

Dented and Gelleon are right, we need to know what you want, and then what you want help with. You can then assign tasks to those you see most fit (some of us are graphics guru's, some maths, some a bit of it all, (check out our threads to get an idea of what we can offer)), TCP/IP is new to everyone but Galleon and DSMan!

You might wanna layout how you want things coded too as QB supports both linear and semi OOP styles. You say you're gonna use a scripting language to make stuff, that seems a bit excessive to me as we would all then need to learn it to contribute.

I thank you all for ideas. I believe i will take that the heart, and get a crappy graphics, but functional engine going. But I don't wont people that aren't committed because they think programming is fun. And in no way am I like Osama,...Obama..sorry. I get stuff done. But to be perfectly honest, I suck at story lines and graphics. But if you think its good for me to do everything, you add in a couple sprites then take credit, then thats what ill do?? I know what i need to do, and what i will do. But I need people that will write a kick-ass story line. Whats graphics without story. Also need good graphics. Also about multiplayer, give me a library and ill learn it.
Thanks

No library, TCP/IP functions are built into QB64 look up _OPENHOST in the Wiki to get an idea.
